A competition born of passion for flowers and education

Gateway to the Americas Cup was founded in 1996 by Gus and Deborah De La Flor, two globally recognised personalities in the floristry industry. The aim of the competition was to promote the art of floral design, education and collaboration between professionals.

After years of presentations and courses held in North America, Central America and South America, the De family La Flor noted the extraordinary potential of the floral community in these regions and decided to create an event that would bring together the talents of industry in an international competition.

Today, Gateway to the Americas Cup is considered one of the most important floral design competitions in the Western Hemisphere and a launch pad for many artists who later end up participating in world competitions such as the Interflora World Cup.

Three days of intense competition

Participation in Gateway is not easy at all. Competitors are selected from among the best flower designers in the countries they represent and are subjected to complex trials during three days of competition.

Each participant shall perform works in several categories of floral design within a limited period of time and shall be assessed according to strict criteria:

  • creativity;
  • technical;
  • proportions and balance;
  • use of floral material;
  • originality;
  • visual impact;
  • respect the subject.

The level of competition is so high that many Gateway winners later became reference names in world floral design.

Ioana Nechifor represents Romania

For Romania, participation in an event of this magnitude represents an extraordinary opportunity to promote the local talent and the level reached by the Romanian floristry industry.

Presence Joan Nechifor within the Gateway to the Americas Cup demonstrates that Romanian flower designers can compete at the highest international level. His work attracted attention through artistic sensitivity, attention to detail and the ability to transform flowers into a complex visual language.

Participation in a competition of this level does not just mean performing spectacular works. It means sharing experience, access to the latest international trends and the opportunity to interact with some of the world’s most appreciated floral industry professionals.

For any florist, the Gateway experience is a true vocational and artistic school.

More than a contest

One of the reasons why Gateway to the Americas Cup is so appreciated is its educational spirit.

Although the competition focuses on performance and excellence, the organisers have been looking from the outset at building an international community in which flower designers learn from each other and contribute to the development of the profession.

Over the years, the event has become a meeting point for:

  • floral designers;
  • teachers and trainers;
  • flower distributors;
  • producers;
  • leaders of professional associations;
  • representatives of international schools of florists.

This combination of competition and education is one of the reasons why Gateway continues to be relevant after almost 30 years of existence.
