How to choose flowers and a message for a birthday, name day or wedding anniversary

Choose flowers to suit the person as well as the occasion. This guide explains the differences between a birthday, a name day and a wedding anniversary, with examples of concise, appropriate messages.

The occasion can guide your message, but it does not determine the right flowers on its own. The recipient’s preferences, the space where the gift will be received and the nature of your relationship are more useful guides than a list of rigid rules.

A birthday, a name day and a wedding anniversary are different occasions

For a birthday, begin with a favourite colour or flower. A simple message might read: “Happy birthday! Wishing you a year filled with loved ones and happy moments.” This is an editorial example, not wording attached to a specific product.

For a name day, there is no need to mention age. You might write: “Happy name day! I’m sending you my warmest wishes.”

A wedding anniversary message can refer to a shared memory: “For all the wonderful things we have built together.” Flowers reminiscent of the wedding may be a thoughtful idea, but their availability and any recreation of an earlier design must be confirmed.

Adapt the gesture to the person

Whether the recipient is your mother, a friend or a colleague, avoid assumptions based only on age or gender. One person may prefer a restrained design while another enjoys bold contrast. It is also worth considering whether they have a suitable vase or space for the arrangement.

In a professional setting, say specifically what you appreciate: “Thank you for your contribution to the project.” Do not assume that corporate branding, a particular accessory or availability for a larger quantity is included unless it is stated and confirmed.

When there is no formal occasion

A just because gift needs no elaborate explanation. “I was thinking of you” may express your intention better than a long message that does not sound like you.

Check the product and the message separately

A card, printed ribbon or accessory is not automatically included because a design appears in an occasion category. Read the published description and options. If you are deciding on the format, see our guide to the differences between a bouquet and an arrangement.

Availability note. A product can be ordered only where a verified florist, delivery coverage, a valid price and an available delivery slot have all been confirmed.
